Thoughts from Jewels of a Dragonfly Studio owner, porcelain artist, and jewelry artist: Susanne Fedor
Growing
up in a small Pennsylvania coal town, summers were spent at our
family cottage on an undeveloped lake created by the coal company. My
childhood days overflowed with the drama of the lake's habitat. My
parents would find me exploring the woods and wildlife or covered in
soot searching abandoned coal banks for fossils and semi precious gem
stones. The wonders of insects, lake creatures, and the diverse rocks
fascinated me in childhood, and still do today.
Years ago,
my husband and I bought five acres of farmland atop a hill in western
Broome County, New York. Wooded forests, hills and wildlife
surround our home which we designed and built together. We
enjoy
a beautiful eastern view of the valley from our living room and our
deck overlooks my expansive flower garden. I developed my
love of
perennial gardening through many seasons of planting, separating,
weeding, enjoying, and best of all sharing, my flowers with friends, my
husband, and my two sons.
You will see reflected in my
pieces, my love of nature which reminds me of my childhood and my
country style of living. Dragonflies, butterflies, beetles, moths,
flowers, leaves and other insects are the subjects of many of my works.
Water creatures such as fish, starfish, shells, pearls and coral are
also reflected, and represent my love of the water. My expansive
childhood collections included all rocks which glittered in the
sunlight. My
collection has expanded beyond fool's gold and quartz these
days. You will find crystals, semi precious stones and sparklies in my
jewelry.
Because
I am continually redefining myself (adapting to changes in my life), I
felt that Jewels of a Dragonfly would be an appropriate name for my
jewelry business. I hope that you enjoy my collections as much as
I have enjoyed making them.
